The face of the long serpent in the distance is a reference to a death mask of the Tiwanaku people of the Andes. The “Death Road” is a real, world famous, place in Bolivia; which is why the title was chosen. Each figure in the painting is a representation of myself. The feeling of an ominous impending doom is something I personally feel daily and use as a motivator to be as productive as possible every moment.

Many identify as part of a rebellion with what they create. We bet on ourselves, and constantly question our choices of instability in the pursuit of honing a craft. The person in the piece is a reflection of myself and many like me. The mask on his head is a reference to the mask of the kusillo, a persona of the andean cosmovision, a tricker who is celebrated during time of the harvest. The cityscape is based off various cities such as DC, Baltimore and San Francisco. The figure in the background is a reference to the traditional clothing worn by the people of the Andes.

The sacred bird of the Andes is the Andean Condor. The portrayal of these creatures as predators in this painting is a personal reflection of the current state of fear the few now hold over the many. The brick road is reminiscent of a chess board, as we are seen as pawns by corporations and privileged individuals. The character in the painting is inspired by a self made artist I met twenty years ago. Her story is similar to that of Matilda, in which she proved her capacity by reading everything in her grasp and only grew from there. The background is an homage to the mountain ranges from my roots.

There is a constant conflict in most of us when it comes to making a choice between fueling the flame of peace or violence. This piece is the exploration of an internal conflict felt by so many of us where we feel a need to express our frustration through our art but also battle of feeling implicit to evoking violence with our work.

We are now at a turning point in history where outsourcing has passed from cheap labor in foreign countries to total exploitation guised as artificial intelligence. The generations who hold dear a world of analog memories and intimate moments now feel as if our own sense of self and home are ablaze. This painting was inspired by a small child who I hold dear and hope in some way will find balance between the world we see from our past and a future none of us will see.

A light hearted painting based on the absurd dynamics of vices and pleasure. The cat’s name is Archie, and the main character is based off a truly amazing artist from Oregon. The figure floating in the piece is based on myself as I usually have my head in the clouds.

There are so many of us trying to relive the moments of our childhood that shaped us as individuals. Unfortunately as we gain the freedom to explore life as an adult the tides rise and more and are explained that what was once safe is now toxic. This painting is based off a part of an andean trail called the Takesi, a well traveled 3 day hike known by locals and foreigners of the Andes Mountains. The position of the character in a hazmat suit upside-down is a reflection of the constant question of what is real, what is right, and what is safe.

In Siargao Philippines I met a retired nurse who had made the Island his home. This is that man. He worked hard his entire life and now dedicated himself to simple pleasures and leisure conversations with like minded people. The animal in his lap is wearing a mask decorated with the Chakana, a symbol of the southern cross and related to seasons changing and andean culture.

The background to the painting is based on a landscape of La Paz Bolivia, my hometown. The attire of the giant figure is all based on modern wear of people Bolivia. The figure is based on a model who is a world traveling type writer poet. At the figure’s feet is a small van, which is typical public transportation in La Paz. The clouds coming out of the figure is an expression of the connection between the movement of the sky and the people who take to the winds.

The dream of owning a house now seems much more like a nightmare. So many now resort to living a life as a remote worker or “digital nomad” since the debt of houses has now more been associated with a sense of drowning than freedom. All the symbols in the painting are a reflection of the action of finding asylum from what was once the endgame of most hard working people.

As an immigrant I always resonated with wings, birds, and the freedom in the ability to fly away. The wings of the figure are based on the Andean Condor, a nod to my origins. Since I left La Paz, Bolivia, a high, mountainous city in the Andes, I always remember the landscape I left behind. I constantly look for them. The hats on the finches are a reference to the ornate boulder hats Andean women wear as a form of status, dating back to when the first Italians came to Bolivia finding difficulty selling their fashion. Their business was saved by the Andean women known now now as Cholas. This urban revival of Andean fashion is now referred to as "Cholet" reaching all the way into the architecture of new buildings of the Altiplano. The sleeping tiger is a symbol of the exotic and dangerous depths the Andean people have overcome through many generations. Despite there aren't traditional tigers in Bolivia, jaguars are commonly known as "tigres" to locals.

Inspired by time spent in Portland Oregon, this painting began with a slow process of explorative brush strokes of vibrant colors loosely inspired by patterns seen in indigenous textiles. The character in the painting is based on a talented typewriter poet who traveled the world street performing her poetry and now resides in Portland. I lived many years as a traveling mural artist and street performer. Meeting this poet was a reminder of all the depth that comes from the artistic mind into one moment to quickly inspire the people around us, and just like a well trained dancer. The act of compressing years of practice, success and failures into one moment of beautiful creation to be appreciated by a small audience.

The ocean has been a point of inspiration for myself since an early age. The long process of push and pull with spraypaint and acrylic paint in thin layers was an expression of the frustrations I have felt knowing of the many perils the oceans of the world face due to contamination. The various elements in the painting are based on my time as a diver and the time I spent sketching the horizon on sunsets of long summer days in Oceania and South East Asia. Since I can remember I was obsessed with underwater bubbles. I endlessly swam deep into the ocean and followed my own breathe up to the surface, amazed by the light dancing in the spheres.

The surreal depiction of an urban city has been an ongoing theme in my work for many years. The smoking frog is a surreal depiction of the combination of nature and toxins that make up an urban environment. Turtles have always been a symbol of safety and home throughout my life, going all the way back to the myth of Turtle Island. The anthropomorphism of the bird is a further nod to the disfunction of nature and urban life coexisting. This painting began as a large layer of loose patterns inspired by indigenous textiles from the andes and berber culture and then layered with a push and pull of light and movement.

The feeling of being out in the city has always been a surreal experience for myself. The glares and streaks of the light are hypnotic. There has been many moments where it felt like the streets and buildings were swimming with color as I found myself in complete joy to be part of the moment. There are countless fond memories of enduring a cold night with friends doing nothing more than enjoying each other's company over some drinks. This has happened throughout my life and through the many cities I have lived in. The colors are inspired by my over imaginative way of remembering the moments I've had.

There are stacks of sketchbooks I have filled with memories of my observations as I have moved through various cities. This painting was inspired solely by my sketches as I passed through many cafe's, laundromats and lookouts. The main vision was the idea of capturing a moment of magic in a mundane setting. The painting was done in many layers of transparent washes of acrylic paint slowly built up into glowing buildings and figures.
